Ex-Girlfriends
“Ex-Girlfriends” is a light, entertaining book written by Kylie Adams. The story reminds me of episodes of “Sex and the City”. I will not say that her writing reminds me of Candace Bushnell writing style, because I find her books absolutely boring. However, similar to “Sex and the City”, there are three girlfriends that have one thing in common: same ex-boyfriend.
Now, how dramatic could that be, you wonder? Well, it can get pretty intense. But let’s start from the beginning…
I must admit that I’ve never heard of Kylie Adams before nor was anybody of my friends. City library had a book sale and I noticed this book with interesting cover (three fashionably dressed up women) and title “Ex-Girlfriends”. Interesting enough. I decided to give it a try, while I’m waiting for Sophie Kinsella to write another entertaining book.
Anyway, I read “Ex-Girlfriends” in a heartbeat. Classic story of jet set society, with ups and downs in their relationships, and different career paths. Interesting enough.
Three ex-girlfriends were the best friends in College. They were all in a relationship with a same guy, all-American playboy who everybody loved. He was in the relationship with one of the girlfriends for two years and then he cheated on her with her best friend. And then he cheated on this other girlfriend with another girl. Well, all that wouldn’t be a huge problem if the three of them were not best friends at the time. Their friendship was ruined and they didn’t talk among themselves for years.
As life went on, they all had somewhat successful careers and boyfriends. But none of them could really forget this perfect boyfriend from College. It was his wedding day and they were all invited to his wedding. Past resurfaced painfully, but there was nothing worse than trying to hide oneself behind this perfect masks they had for their social events.
Story follows each character individually, focusing on one person at the time. Interestingly enough, they all get together at times, and this is the part that reminds me the most of Sarah Jessica Parker and her girlfriends in “Sex and the City”. They all get together and dish out about their boyfriends and personal problems, which is always interesting, I must say.
Kylie’s writing style is light read. There is lots of jargon in the conversations, which makes story even easier to follow. There is no way you will be bored by reading this book and as soon as you finish one chapter, you’ll come back for more. At least, that’s what I did. It is always fun reading about problems of a rich and famous people, and this story is no exception.
I must add I was a bit surprised by the ending. I guess, in every book I decide who I want leading character to end up with, and if I don’t get it my way, I stay disappointed. Here, I was a bit disappointed too, but I guess it’s for the best. Not all stories can have a happy ending in Cinderella style, therefore, I should be happy that it ended the way it did. If nothing else, it sort of has a happy-end on its own.
